very interested to see if that works.

The biggest feature request I could ever ask for is a better way of resolving the image files.

Right now for one image:

win2k3entx86
win2k3entx86.000
win2k3entx86.001
win2k3entx86.002
win2k3entx86.first_sectors
win2k3entx86.part

I have to create all these hardlinks:

/win2k3entx86-ide/hda
/win2k3entx86-ide/hda1.000
/win2k3entx86-ide/hda1.001
/win2k3entx86-ide/hda1.002
/win2k3entx86-ide/hda1.first_sectors
/win2k3entx86-ide/hda.part

/win2k3entx86-sda/sda
/win2k3entx86-sda/sda1.000
/win2k3entx86-sda/sda1.001
/win2k3entx86-sda/sda1.002
/win2k3entx86-sda/sda1.first_sectors
/win2k3entx86-sda/sda.part

/win2k3entx86-sda/cciss/c0d0
/win2k3entx86-sda/cciss/c0d0p1.000
/win2k3entx86-sda/cciss/c0d0p1.001
/win2k3entx86-sda/cciss/c0d0p1.002
/win2k3entx86-sda/cciss/c0d0p1.first_sectors
/win2k3entx86-sda/cciss/c0d0.part

x 6 image types = 108 hardlinks

If there was only a way to detect the primary disk type and then resolve one set of files instead of having 3 sets for each.

Hmm... Maybe we should consider adding a text file so to store instructions. Such a file could say: image XXX must be applied to device hda,sda,... -- first of them available being the one to be taken. Something like that.

Right now, I suppose you've made a cmd to make the links ?

My knowledge in shell scripting is limited, so I had some of the guys here do it for me.

But yeah it takes the image files, deploys them to the imaging servers and based off of a txt file it runs the ln command and creates the links.

If there's some way you could tone it down so all the links were needed, that would be HUGE.

I've tried slimmining it down to have sda,hda files, and the cciss folder all in one folder. But it doesnt work based on how it resolves the files.

If I have a c0d0 deploy, it would use the sda.part or hda.part files in \ and then move onto to deploy from the \cciss\ folder.

If I have a sda deploy, it would try to use the hda files in the root before the sda files.

Yep. A facultative instructions text file to be added to the image directory would save you this pain. Todo-list->add!

Yay!

One last thing I wanted to ask before I get too greedy ;) Is there anyway you could somehow prompt for partition sizes and it will build the .part file that way.

I personally auto out everything except the image list screen, but if there was some way It could ask for partition sizes afterwards that would be amazing!

The whole .part thing has to be rethought, in fact... it's already in the todo-list. Even the NTFS boot sector should be optionally rewrited by a future PING release if needed (ex.: new drives, with a different geometry -- which only NTFS boot sectors deny for cloning). Much to do...

Hi there !
Well, it's not going to be a very exciting release, because there has not been any release for a couple of months, which is a lot for us :D

So, this one will mainly consist of components updates. The next one should have better designs and features, as can be read in the todo-list of the rc.ping script (at the bottom).

any chance you can post the to-do list on the forums. Ill check it out Tomorrow or wednesday, and maybe post it myself.

Thanks for the Update!

auto unzip partimage.zip

Postby leuk_he » Sat Jul 19, 2008 10:51 pm

Well, i am quite sure i am not the first who failed to read the howto.

I skipped the part about partimage.zip and was greeted, after viewing the log, that there was "* no entities found"

Question:
-Why not automatically suggest to unzip the partimage.zip from the ping image to the smdbfs share? It is one extra question only.
-Can that error message be clearer? It bump you back to the prompt and you have to dig the log what you did wrong.

Hi Leuk,
The partimage.zip unzipping makes it easy for admins not to allow the making of images by PING users. Yet, the message could be clearer, definitely.

I think we need to re-evaluate that design Natan. Since we can pass parameters to the kernel, could we not use that to control the options?
